National Dialogue on Security and State Police by the House of Representatives
The National Dialogue on Security and State Police, with the themed: "Pathways to Peace: Reimagining Policing in Nigeria", held on 22nd April at the Abuja Continental Hotel as a pivotal moment in Nigeria's law enforcement discourse. Organized by the office of the Speaker of the House of Representatives, the event attracted dignitaries from various sectors, including the former president of Nigeria, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, Vice president, Sen. Kashim Shettima, former head of state, Abdulsalam Abubakar, members of the National Assemly, the Honorable Minister of State for Steel Development, Uba Maigari Ahmadu, royal fathers and others.
The objective of this dialogue is to “open up a national discussion on the merits or otherwise of State Police, aggregate citizens views and perspectives” and propose a model(s) as well as institutional and legal frameworks for implementing state policing in Nigeria.
The president, H.E. Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, was the Guest of Honour ably represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, who inaugurated the event, emphasized that state policing is not merely a policy proposal but a potential milestone in the evolution of Nigeria's law enforcement framework. He highlighted that state policing could create opportunities to tailor law enforcement to meet the diverse needs of communities across the country.
The dialogue featured insightful discussions and perspectives on the feasibility and benefits of state policing. Participants exchanged ideas on how this approach could enhance security and address specific challenges faced by different regions.
